| Women today are increasingly aware of how external factors affect their bodies their babies. One area that doesn’t get a lot of coverage is Nail Polish, like hair dye – many women prefer not to use polish while they are pregnant and breast feeding. It was while she was pregnant and feeding her second child that Naomi Andersson of natural nail care website www.greenhands.co.uk discovered water based nail polish, and realised she wasn’t alone in searching for an alternative. Nail Polish has long been touted as one of the final bastions of beauty routines to actually clean up its act, because nail polish is not intended for use on skin, there has been a history of very harsh chemicals and nasty ingredients. Thankfully industry regulations in Europe changed in 2000. Polish on sale now in the UK will not contain Phthalates, which were the greatest concern, linked to foetal abnormalities. But, how many of us still have bottles of polish in our make up drawers dating back beyond 2000. These do pose a potential risk, as do polishes purchased outside Europe. Add to this the fact that it is still perfectly acceptable to manufacture sell Nail Polish containing Formaldehyde or Formaldehyde releasing ingredients, formaldehyde has been linked to cancer. So, we still need to wise up on ingredients and clean up! Naomi Andersson recommends we clear out those old polish favourites, if it was purchased before 2000 or so long ago we don’t remember! There are a number of alternatives on the market. For women wishing to avoid solvents altogether (those with complaining husbands who don’t like the smell read on!) Green Hands offer Suncoat Water Based Nail Polish, available in a wide range of colours to suit all skin tones. This odourless polish works to make a film over the nail, which dries quickly, and lasts as long as solvent based polishes; it has its own remover, made from non GM Soy and Maize crops, which will work on all types of Nail Polish. No base coat is required, because the film over the nail doesn’t penetrate the nail in any way, the range does include a top coat which gives all the colours an added sparkle! Green Hands started business in September 2005 when Naomi and her husband Ola risked everything to leave the rat race and start a family friendly business with eco friendly credentials. As a professional in business, Naomi had struggled to find suppliers of natural nail care products for herself and as an experienced Product Manager set about bringing the products she found together for others. Naomi is a fully qualified nail technician with an interest in problem nail conditions. Green Hands continue to try out new products; our regular customers are very good at helping us to select the best for sale online and in our nail studio.
