“It is entirely wrong that at present, if the Environment Agency’s objections to developing on a floodplain are ignored it is possible for construction to proceed, giving rise to properties that may become a threat to health and life, as well as uninsurable in the longer term,†he added.

Powerful stuff, which just goes to show that even the professionals are saying it’s time for a re-think flood zone development. There is no escaping the fact that the proposed development by Wates and Martin Grant Homes on and near to the flood plain in Horley is based on out-dated and inaccurate environmental assessments. Decisions must be taken based on fresh evidence and looking to the future. Any new home buyer would be mad to consider purchasing one. Would you buy a home in the Horley flood zone, where the local council admits that ‘the gardens will flood’ (Cllr Lynne Hack, 3 February 2005)? Neither would I.
