Topics to discuss - Parking at East Surrey Hospital

February 12th, 2005

As Derek pointed out to get the site found we have to include phrases in the post headings. I would like a list of topics pertaining to the horley master plan that we would like to address.

One particular problem that i have is the parking at the East Surrey Hospital. There is already no parking there at all - it’s even very limited for the staff (I know because my wife works there). The hospital, in its wisdom has decided that the answer lies in putting the price up! The cost to park is now £1 PER HOUR!! So if you are going to get sick or visit someone who is, make sure you check your bank balance first! :-o Often there’s no parking to be had even at that price. It adds insult to injury that with the shutting of Crawley Hospital that the Crawley people now have to pay more to get their treatment or visit their friends and relatives but they have to pay an extortionate parking fee also!

How much worse is the East Surrey Parking problem going to get if a further 2,600 homes are built - (with thousands more planned in the future).

Never mind the car parking, what about the beds chaos? Yesterday morning (February 14th 2005) when visiting a friend at the hospital we were told by staff that there was at that time a serious bed problem, with 27 recently admitted patients waiting for a bed. How can the hospital infrastructure possibly cope with 2600 extra homes in Horley?

How can the hospital infrastructure possibly cope with 2600 extra homes in Horley? They can’t. They couldn’t cope before Crawley was merged. East Surrey has become one of the countries worst hospitals in my opinion. I am going to try to get one of the surgeons there to comment further.

The total infrastructure of East Surrey is fundamentally collapsing - I have factual evidence and inside knowledge - there is a continuous bed shortage, added to which is a shortage of qualified nurses, the hospital is many, many millions over budget, the chief executive has been fired [gardening leave due to stress !!]- fact is he was useless (that the good news), the bad news is that he is to be paid many thousands of pounds for failure (nice work if you can get it), the parking situation is an utter disgrace for both staff and the public and just to top it all off, the general standard of hygiene is simply appalling (internally discribed as a time-bomb waiting to go off)- the recent bout of sickness, closing a number of wards confirmed this. They appear to be in good shape to accept the occupants of 2600 new homes!

Brian, I couldn’t agree more. I have spent lots of time at the hospital lately (wife had a baby - then sister in law had baby).

Not just has the CEO gone but the trust chairman also.

The parking has reverted to how it was (although the £1.00 per hour charge remains). They have pulled the permit parking idea where only staff who live outside a certain distance get to park - my wife (a nurse) was offered a grant to buy a bicycle! Staff were having to wait up to 40 minutes to park as there were no spaces at all! No wonder the CEO is stressed!

I also heard that the staff were lied to over the parking fiasco - supposedly the trust were turned down for planning permission to extend car parking facilities - there was never any planning application submitted to be turned down.

The general morale amongst all the staff that I spoke to is rock bottom.

I agree that they have in no way any chance of dealing with an extra 100 new houses in the area let alone 2600 - or, if The South East Plan goes through up to 32,000 new houses PER YEAR!!
